LADYBOY: THAILAND’S THEATER OF ILLUSION
The photographs in this coffee table e-book colourfully reveal the glamorous world of Thai transvestite cabaret. 4,000 words, 86 full colour images
- By Andrew Forbes and Colin Hinshelwood, with photography by David Wilner
In Thailand practically every town or village has several openly transsexual boys or men who dress as women and are born with feminine characteristics. They are known by a Thai term which translates 'Women of the Second Kind', and are also often known by the English loan word 'Ladyboy'.
Perhaps no other country in the world has such a large percentage of transsexuals, nor arguably does there exist any other culture where persons of the ‘third gender' can live and interact with society so freely and comfortably.
The photographs in this 'coffee table e-book' portray the glamorous world of Thai erotic and exotic transvestite cabaret and represent, faithfully, Thailand's extraordinary 'Theater of Illusion'.
- David Wilner enjoyed a long career as a Chicago-based architect before retiring to Chiang Mai where he began photographing the Thai transgender cabaret scene. The images presented here are his personal selection from the many hundreds he shot in Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya over the years. Colin Hinshelwood is also based in Chiang Mai and works closely with CPA Media as well as writing for Irrawaddy Magazine. All the pictures in this book, together with a further selection, are available online at Pictures From History.
